GOLNAR TABIBZADEH

Shroud
9 August -27 August, 2024

The current exhibition is the seventh in a series of exhibits held by Assar Art Gallery in close collaboration with other galleries during its relocation to a new space.

Golnar Tabibzadeh began working on the Shroud Series, her second solo show with Assar Art Gallery, two years ago in Berlin. Although geographically distant from the Middle East, the collection is inspired by current events in the region. Throughout her professional practice over the past twenty years, Golnar Tabibzadeh has consistently painted her thoughts and emotions in a narrative style, influenced by social, political, and cultural events. The characters in her paintings are often real people, removed from their social contexts, allowing the viewer to observe the traumatic impacts of their lived experiences, free from social norms.

The portraits displayed in the Shroud Series are inspired by real-life incidents. This collection looks at the regenerative aspects of memory and the significant human understanding that is gained via lived experiences. It is a fluid experience that would go beyond guided information to seek and find the truth, suggesting that humans are capable of retrieving “reality” in its immediate absence through its traces within their own experience. This series invites the viewers to take a moment, claim space, trust their instinctive notion, and find the story within the image.

Born in 1983 in Tehran, Golnar Tabibzadeh is a painter, art instructor, and researcher based in Berlin. In addition to painting, she has expanded her practice to include art management and curation in recent years. Her activities in these areas consist of organizing the Art Expression Workshops, as well as, establishing and managing the Mirror of Creation Projects, including the MOC Residency and MOC Lab. Over the past two decades, she has held ten solo shows and participated in more than twenty group shows in Iran and many countries around the world, including Turkey, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
